About this course

Where can you take a 4WD? OK. Better question: where can you take a 4WD and then bring it back again? What trouble can you get into, and how do you get out of it? How do you prevent yourself getting into trouble? These questions and many more are covered in Tocal’s two-day 4x4 training course.

The course aims to develop knowledge and skills in:
  • Conduct checks of, and perform maintenance and minor repairs, on 4WD vehicles
  • Operate a 4WD vehicle on unsealed terrain types and steep slopes
  • Plan and apply a safe recovery method using vehicle recovery equipment safely.

  • Identify four-wheel drive specific terms and terminology
  • Conduct checks of 4 x 4 vehicle and equipment

Day One:

  • Four wheel driving theory
  • Maintenance and vehicle set-up
  • Field exercises - dirt road driving, slopes, rugged terrain driving

Day Two:

  • Stall recovery
  • Vehicle recovery techniques - snatch straps, Jacking, electric and hand winching
  • Field exercises - negotiating mud, sand, and water crossings

Please note: This program may vary due to venue, weather and client requirements.

  • Participants are provided with Department of Primary Industries –  A Field Guide to Four Wheel Driving manual.
  • This course is delivered using both indoor and outdoor instruction.

  • Participants must hold a minimum provisional P2 license - Green P's.
  • Participants are to supply their own Four Wheel Drive vehicle.
