Recognition of Prior Learning, or RPL, is another way that people who have significant experience working in industry can be assessed for their competency in nationally recognised units of competence. RPL recognises prior learning and skills that have been acquired through formal and informal learning while undertaking employed or voluntary work. RPL is a “competency-based” assessment process, where a candidate can provide a range of different evidence that is mapped against each unit of competency they apply for within a full or part qualification. This evidence is assessed for validity, reliability and currency by qualified trainers and assessors who are subject matter experts, who can also identify any gaps in your evidence and provide additional training that may be required.

Any current or potential student can apply for RPL as part of the pre-enrolment process. Candidates will be required to complete an interview with the Tocal RPL coordinator to confirm that they have sufficient prior experience and capacity to provide valid evidence to successfully complete the RPL assessment for each unit of competency that they apply for. The time needed to complete a full or part qualification through RPL will be different for every candidate. The process can range from three to eight months, depending on the skills and experience of the individual.
