Learn how to service and maintain your small powered machines

Keeping your small powered machines well maintained can help them run safely, reliably and efficiently. This hands-on one-day course will give you the practical skills to carry out basic servicing, identify common faults and complete simple repairs.

You’ll work with equipment such as mowers, chainsaws, brush cutters, pumps and other small engine machines while learning how to use tools and equipment correctly.

You’ll learn how to:

  • carry out basic servicing and routine maintenance on small powered machines
  • identify common faults and understand basic repair techniques
  • read and follow service manuals and instructions
  • correctly use tools and workshop equipment
  • follow safe work practices and understand key WHS requirements.

  • Participants receive course notes.
  • This course is delivered using indoor and out door instruction.

Participants must:

  • Be 16 years of age or older.
  • Have the physical capability to undertake practical workshop tasks, including lifting, moving, and carrying small engines and powered equipment (such as mowers, chainsaws, brush cutters, and pumps).
  • Be comfortable working with mechanical hand tools, machinery components, fuels, and lubricants in a workshop environment.
  • Follow strict Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements and Work Health and Safety (WHS) directions from instructors.
  • Not have disqualifying medical conditions that could impair manual dexterity, physical mobility, or safe handling of tools and small engines.

Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Capability Requirements

To complete this course successfully, participants will need:

  • Reading: Interpreting service manuals, engine schematics, safety data sheets (SDS) for fuels and oils, and tool manufacturer instructions.
  • Writing: Completing maintenance logs, service checklists, and basic fault diagnosis reports.
  • Numeracy: Measuring oil volumes, calculating fuel-to-oil two-stroke mixing ratios, checking spark plug gaps, and reading pressure/torque specifications.
  • Oral Communication & Hearing: Communicating effectively in a workshop environment, asking clarifying questions regarding fault diagnostics, and responding immediately to verbal safety warnings.
  • Digital Literacy: Basic computer or smartphone skills
