Build your skills in tractor operations and using front and rear attachments

Get hands-on experience operating tractors with a range of front and rear attachments in this two-day practical course. You’ll learn how to safely set up, connect, adjust and use different implements in real-world farm and workplace situations.

You’ll learn how to:

  • safely operate tractors with and without attached equipment
  • select, attach, remove, test and safely use different tractor implements
  • use three-point linkage, power take-off and trailed implements
  • safely tow equipment and loads
  • safely operate a front-end loader and use its attachments
  • use front-end loader controls and features correctly
  • safely secure and store a front-end loader when it is not in use.

Whether you want to improve your existing tractor skills or build your confidence using a wider range of attachments, this course will give you practical skills you can use on the farm, property or workplace.

Is this course right for me?

Before registering, check that this course suits you. You’ll need to be at least 16 years old and have previous experience driving a tractor.

You’ll need to be comfortable climbing into and out of a tractor and safely operating the controls. The course involves practical activities, including attaching, adjusting and manoeuvring equipment. You should also be comfortable following safety instructions and not have any medical conditions that could affect your ability to safely operate a tractor, front-end loader or attachments. Day one

  • Hazard, risk and control options
  • Perform pre-start checks on unfamiliar tractor
  • Attach, reverse and remove a trailed implement
  • Attach and remove a 3-point linkage implement
  • Attach and remove implement fitted with remote hydraulics
  • Attach, operate and remove PTO driven implement
  • Operate a tractor and implement in field condition
  • Remove attachments, park tractors and review course

Day two

  • Perform pre-start checks on unfamiliar tractor
  • Attach, reverse and remove front-end loader attachment
  • Operate tractor with front-end loader attachment
  • Remove front-end loader attachment, park tractors and review course

Please note: This program may vary due to weather requirements.

Participants must:

  • Be 16 years of age or older.
  • Possess previous experience driving a tractor—you must be comfortable mounting/dismounting, operating tractor cabin controls, and driving a basic tractor setup.
  • Have the physical strength, stamina, and capability to undertake extended practical tasks, including climbing in and out of machinery cabins, hitching heavy three-point linkage components, coupling PTO shafts, connecting hydraulic hoses, and handling front-end loader attachments.
  • Not have disqualifying medical conditions that could impair physical mobility, balance, reaction time, or the safe operation of heavy agricultural machinery and front-end loaders.
  • Be comfortable working outdoors and strictly following Work Health and Safety (WHS) instructions from instructors.

Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Capability Requirements

To complete this course successfully, participants will need:

  • Reading: Interpreting tractor and front-end loader operator manuals, implement load and bucket capacity charts, safety warning labels, hydraulic flow ratings, and PTO speed limits.
  • Writing: Completing pre-start machinery inspection checklists, risk assessment worksheets, load rating verifications, and daily maintenance logs.
  • Numeracy: Performing basic calculations relating to front-and-rear counterweights/ballasting, safe working load (SWL) limits for loader arms, towing weights, and load center adjustments.
  • Oral Communication & Hearing: Communicating effectively with ground crew and spotters, maintaining situational awareness around high-reach loader buckets, and responding immediately to verbal or visual safety directions.
  • Digital Literacy: Basic computer or smartphone skills.
