Before registering, check that this course suits you. You’ll need to be at least 16 years old and able to safely control a side-by-side utility vehicle. You should be comfortable steering, manoeuvring, positioning and stopping the vehicle in a controlled manner across different types of terrain. The course involves practical outdoor activities, so you’ll need to be comfortable following safety instructions and completing basic physical tasks. You should also not have any medical conditions that could affect your ability to safely operate a side-by-side. Participants must:

  • Be 16 years of age or older.
  • Possess basic vehicle driving ability—you must be comfortable steering, maneuvering, positioning, and stopping a side-by-side utility vehicle in a controlled manner across varied terrain.
  • Have the physical capability to perform practical outdoor tasks, including entering and exiting the vehicle cabin, operating foot controls and steering, carrying out pre-start inspections, and securing cargo or loads.
  • Not have disqualifying medical conditions that could impair vision, reaction time, physical coordination, or the safe operation of a utility vehicle.
  • Be comfortable working outdoors and following safety instructions from instructors.

Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Capability Requirements

To complete this course successfully, participants will need:

  • Reading: Interpreting owner operating manuals, pre-start inspection checklists, vehicle rollover warning labels, and manufacturer load/towing limits.
  • Writing: Completing basic pre-start checklists, hazard identification forms, and maintenance logs.
  • Numeracy: Performing basic calculations relating to tire pressure checks, payload distribution, tray weight limits, and towing capacities.
  • Oral Communication & Hearing: Communicating clearly with instructors, maintaining situational awareness in outdoor paddock environments, and responding immediately to verbal safety commands.
  • Digital Literacy: Basic computer or smartphone skills.
