Keep your chainsaw skills current and work safely

Keeping your chainsaw skills up to date is important for working safely and following current industry best practices. This one-day reassessment service is designed for people who have previously completed chainsaw training and want to maintain their skills and demonstrate that they can continue to work safely and competently.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • refresh your knowledge of safe chainsaw operation
  • demonstrate your existing chainsaw skills
  • review safe work practices and the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • demonstrate current skills in line with industry best practices.

This reassessment service is for participants who have previously completed training in Trim and Cut Felled Trees or Fell Trees Manually (Basic). Reassessment is recommended for people whose accreditation was obtained within the last three years.

The learning outcomes are dependent on the course the participant seeks reaccreditation:

  • Trim & cut reaccreditation - $640

The course structure are dependent on the course the participant seeks reaccreditation:

  • An identification card is issued listing training undertaken and units of competency awarded.
  • This course is delivered using outdoor instruction.

Participants must:

  • Provide proof of prior formal training in either Trim and Cut Felled Trees or Fell Trees Manually (Basic) (reassessment is strongly recommended for those who completed accreditation within the last 3 years).
  • Possess existing, active confidence and competence in operating and maintaining chainsaws—this service is for skill currency verification, not initial skills training.
  • Have the physical strength, stamina, and agility required to operate chainsaw equipment safely across uneven, sloped, or rugged terrain.
  • Be physically capable of standing, bending, crouching, and kneeling while managing tool vibration and handling operational loads.
  • Strictly comply with Work Health and Safety (WHS) directives and instructor safety commands.

Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Capability Requirements

To complete this reassessment successfully, participants will need:

  • Reading: Interpreting current operator manuals, bar and chain maintenance specifications, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and updated WHS compliance guidelines.
  • Writing: Completing pre-operational risk assessments (Job Safety Analysis / Take 5) and pre-start inspection checklists.
  • Numeracy: Verifying fuel-to-oil mix ratios, measuring log lengths, and evaluating wood tension and compression forces in timber.
  • Oral Communication & Hearing: Demonstrating effective ground-crew communication, using standardized hand signals and clear verbal callouts in high-noise environments, and executing emergency stop protocols.
  • Digital Literacy: Basic computer or smartphone skills.
