The 2019 NSW DPI Tocal College Approved Australian Stock Horse Sale saw strong competition for the thirteen horses offered. The horses were sold for above average prices based on Tocal’s sales over the past 12 years. This was a strong endorsement of the sale even as drought conditions persist across NSW.

This sale was the latest in twelve years of horse sales for Tocal. Thirteen horses offered for sale resulted in a gross sale value of $92,500. The average price paid was $7,115, above the average for all sales since 2007. The mare ‘Tocal Quality Time’ brought the top price of $14,500 and gelding “Tocal Quinton’ came in a close second sold for $14,000. Horses were purchased by buyers from Victoria, NSW and Queensland.

Tocal College Principal Mr Darren Bayley was particularly impressed with the strength of the offering and bidding. He said that the sale continues to provide great encouragement to all the staff and students at Tocal College.

This sale also provided an opportunity for staff, students and attendees to formally farewell Warwick Lawrence who moved on from Tocal early this year to take on the management of another horse operation.

Darren Bayley congratulated Warwick and his family on the long and successful association with Tocal and the development of the Tocal Horse course. “Warwick is a very successful trainer and exhibitor in his own right and the 300 or more students that have passed through the Horse course over the past 16 years, owe a debt of gratitude to Warwick for his efforts” Darren said.

Centre Manager Michael Ison also acknowledged the work of staff right across education and Tocal farms for the day to day attention to managing the horses. “The horses have been presented at the sale today in great condition but it must be noted that managing the health and welfare of around 100 Australian Stock Horses at Tocal is a 365 day responsibility and all staff contribute, ensuring that the horses are always in great shape’ he said.

The Tocal Australian Stock Horse sale is an Annual event at Tocal and will remain one of the most important events in the Horse Course calendar. The sale is an opportunity for students to experience preparing horse for sale in a big event and is an invaluable experience setting them up for a career in agriculture.

Tocal College and the horse course are now preparing for and looking forward to next sale in November 2020.
