About this course

Free quad bike and side-by-side vehicle (SSV) training is offered to eligible farmers through the NSW Quad Bike Safety Improvement Program. This training is for groups of six or more, available across regional and remote NSW and includes a free helmet for those completing the quad bike course.

Quad bike and SSVs are useful farm vehicles. Quad bikes are a leading cause of injury on NSW farms. The NSW quad bike safety improvement program is an initiative of SafeWork NSW, offering support to NSW farmers to undertake harm prevention activities associated with on-farm use of quad bikes. The program includes a small business quad bike safety rebate and training package to reduce deaths and injuries on NSW farms.

Operate a quad bike

  • Prepare a quad bike for operation
  • Operate a quad bike
  • Complete quad bike operation

or Operate a side by side utility vehicle

  • Prepare a side by side utility vehicle for use
  • Operate a side by side utility vehicle
  • Side by side utility vehicle shut-down procedures.

  • Quad bike operational hazards
  • Workplace health and safety issues
  • Quad bike design and selection
  • Basic maintenance
  • Basic quad bike operating techniques through a designated course
  • Basic quad bike operating techniques negotiating a dirt road route
  • Operating quad bikes with a range of loads attached
  • Loading, unloading and securing Quad bikes to a transport vehicle
  • Periodic maintenance
  • Advanced riding techniques using slopes and rough terrain
  • Clean up quad bikes and refuel

  • Participants in the Quad Bike training receive a free helmet
  • Participants are provided with the Department of Primary Industries manual Quad Bikes – A Practical Guide or Side by Sides – A Practical Guide.
  • This course is delivered using both indoor and outdoor instruction.

  • Participants must be over 16 years of age.
  • Meet all eligibility requirements under the Quad Bike Safety Improvement Program eligibility criteria (PDF)

The quad bike course is mapped to the national unit of competency AHCMOM217 Operate quad bikes.

The side by side course is mapped to the national unit of competency AHCMOM216 Operate side by side utility vehicles.
