About this course

Thinking of working in grain harvest this season and need to learn basic tractor and machinery skills? Grain harvest workers need to safely operate and maintain sophisticated machinery and equipment while maintaining high standards of product hygiene. This hands-on, 3-day course is designed to assist people with no prior experience operating farm machinery to gain the basic skills required to commence supervised work operating and maintaining tractors and machinery to assist with harvest operations.

The course aims to develop knowledge and skills in:
  • basic tractor operation
  • the processes of grain harvest from the field to bulk storage
  • introduction to WHS on farm
  • basic operational principles of a tractor and chaser bin, combine harvester, grain cartage, handling and storage.

Day 1: Introduction to tractors

  • Basic training in tractor operation. (AHCMOM202 - Operate tractors)
  • Utilising industry relevant medium to large tractor and associated equipment
  • Daily service and maintenance; basics of machine cleaning
  • Trailed implement and PTO attachment
  • Basic awareness training in safe operation of a range of grain handling equipment

Day 2 and 3: Harvest Operations

  • Training in Tractor/Chaser bin operation in conjunction with Combine Harvester under field conditions.
  • Basic awareness training in safe operation of grain handling equipment such as “chaser bins”, augers, conveyors, elevators etc
  • Overview of the processes of grain harvest from the field to bulk storage
  • Introduction to the basic operational principles of a combine harvester, grain cartage, handling and storage.
  • Introduction to WHS and the hazards and risks relating to grain harvest operations. Fire safety (temperature, wind etc), sun safety, hydration
  • Grain handling using tractor powered equipment, storage, and handling of grain
  • Daily service and maintenance; basics of machine cleaning
  • Trailed implement and PTO attachment
  • Machinery maintenance, cleaning and hygiene issues when moving between fields and farms
  • Effective cleaning methods and practices
