Tocal College has partnered with Animal Health Australia (AHA) since 2005, and Plant Health Australia (PHA) from 2015, to deliver nationally accredited training for biosecurity emergency response personnel. This highly successful partnership is being concluded in June 2023 and Tocal is no longer able to take new enrolments.

The Biosecurity Field Surveillance Skill Set PUASS00059 provides the skills and knowledge needed to recognise unusual animal disease or plant pest signs and take appropriate reporting action, particularly when engaged in field surveillance teams within a biosecurity emergency response.

Course structure

To successfully achieve the Biosecurity Field Surveillance Skill Set, you must:

  1. Complete two (2) foundation courses from Animal Health Australia and Plant Health Australia
  2. Complete two (2) online modules
  3. Attend one (1) face-to-face workshop.

Details

Complete the two (2) Foundation Courses from Animal Health Australia and Plant Health Australia. These provide an informative introduction to the operation of plant pest and animal disease biosecurity emergency responses.

    The two (2) online modules include:

    • SURVBER Undertaking field surveillance for emergency animal diseases or plant pests (approx. 4-5 hours)
    • MACHBER Inspection and decontamination of equipment and machinery to prevent the spread of pests and diseases (approx. 3 hours).

There will be a face-to-face workshop where jurisdiction-specific information will be covered, and the final assessment for the units of competency AHCBER402 Carry out field surveillance for a specific emergency disease or plant pest and AHCBIO302 Identify and report unusual disease or plant pest signs will take place. Your trainer will provide details of the timing and location of this workshop.
