Landscape values

The College farms are an important part of the Tocal and Paterson landscape. The College Landscape Plan addresses this issue. It sets out plans for future tree planting, and recommends suitable species to use for various areas on the eastern part of the property. Because of the importance of the Homestead complex, the plan also makes recommendations on plantings in the Homestead area. Keeping these historic buildings in their correct setting in an important task.

Further development of the Landscpae Plan will seek to conserve and be consistant with the natural heritage of the Tocal site.

The College must seek to balance the cultural and natural elements that are a part of the rural aesthetic. Tree planting should have antural look when possible. Regular rows of trees appear artificial and should be avoided. Using a mixture of shrubs and trees in future plantings is important to biodiversity as well as improving the landscape. Many general principles in the Landscape Plan apply to the rest of the farm. Revision of the Property management Plan should include recommendations in the Landscape Plan.
